Cabin Baggage Allowances For Each UK Airline

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

There is a lot to think about before boarding a flight. You need to ensure you have your passport, your money and your luggage. Though you might have done an exceptional job of packing everything you need for the trip, a lot of people forget to check what they are allowed to bring on board. If you turn up and your cabin baggage is too heavy, you might be told that it needs to be checked in. Not only is this a huge inconvenience, but it usually comes with a hefty cost.

The cabin baggage allowance in the UK varies depending on the type of flight, the airline and the destination. This is why it’s important to do your research before you travel. Otherwise you run the risk of turning up at the airport and being told that your cabin baggage weighs too much, or that your baggage is too large. Though most major UK airlines have similar hand baggage allowances, they do vary slightly and this is why it’s important to check the policy of the specific airline you are flying with.

Generally, passengers are allowed to carry on board their hand luggage and cabin baggage. This includes items such as a laptop bag or a suitcase that can be stowed in the overhead compartment or under your seat. Though airlines allow passengers to bring an extra item of cabin baggage on board for free, this is not the case for every airline and some charge extra for the privilege. If you want to avoid being faced with an unexpected baggage charge, check with your airline before you travel to find out what your specific cabin baggage allowance is.

How Much Cabin Baggage Are You Allowed?

British Airways - If you are someone who likes to travel with a lot of cabin baggage, British Airways is an airline worth flying with. They allow passengers to carry one piece of hand luggage and one small item, both of which can weigh up to 23kg. This is more than a lot of other airlines allow. Your hand luggage must be 56cm x 45cm x 25m or smaller, and your small item must not be larger than 40cm x 30cm x 15cm.

Easyjet - It’s no secret that Easyjet are strict with their cabin baggage allowance and they rarely bend the rules for anyone, so it’s important to check your hand luggage before you get to the airport. Passengers are allowed one small cabin baggage each, and this cannot exceed 45cm x 36cm x 20cm. Though there is no weight limit, Easyjet’s policy states that your cabin baggage must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Ryanair - There are a variety different cabin baggage allowances with Ryanair, so make sure to check your ticket and what your specific booking includes. All passengers are allowed to take one small personal bag on board and this must fit underneath the seat in front of you. If you have priority boarding, you are allowed to take on one personal bag and one small piece of hand luggage. These cannot be larger than 40cm x 20cm x 25xm and 55cm x 40cm x 20cm respectively, and the latter cannot weigh more than 10kg.

Jet2 - If you are flying with Jet2, you are allowed to take one piece of hand luggage on board for free. This cannot be larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and it cannot weigh more than 10kg. If your cabin baggage is bigger than this, you will need to pay to have it checked into the hold. You are also allowed to take a small personal item onboard a Jet2 flight, such as a handbag or laptop.

TUI - The TUI cabin baggage allowance is complex and a lot of it depends on whether you have booked a package holiday or not. All TUI passengers are allowed one piece of hand luggage each. This must not be larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and it must not weigh more than 10kg. One major difference between TUI and other airlines, is that laptops and handbags must also fit inside this one piece of hand luggage. You are also allowed to take a pushchair onto TUI flights for free of charge, if you have a child under two years of age. If your TUI flight is booked as part of a package holiday, children under two are also allowed to take cabin baggage of up to 10kg on board.

Virgin Atlantic - You can take one piece of cabin baggage onto a Virgin Atlantic flight, which cannot exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm or weigh more than 10kg. As well as cabin baggage, a lot of Virgin Atlantic flights come with a free checked baggage allowance. This does vary depending on the type of ticket you have, so doing some research is key. If you are travelling with an infant aged between 0 and 23 months, they are allowed a cabin bag weighing up to 6kg.

Lufthansa - Lufthansa allows passengers to take an item of cabin baggage onto the plane. This could be a small suitcase, a garment bag or a buggy. This item cannot be larger than 55cm x 40cm x 23cm and it shouldn’t weigh more than 8kg. You are also allowed to take another small item of hand luggage onto a Lufthansa flight, such as a handbag or laptop.
